Viewpoint at the pilot station
The pilot station consists of a waiting hall, a common room, a control center with radio and radar, and a jetty. Here you can observe how the pilots on the passing ships take turns on the fly during the journey. For the change, a pilot boat approaches the passing ship and hands over a new pilot, who goes on board via a rope ladder, the so-called pilot ladder. Then the previous pilot disembarks and is brought ashore by the pilot boat. Previously, the pilot stowage station was located in Nübbel, today it is located on the other side of the canal in Rüstenbergen. There is a memorial stone in the garden of the pilot stowage building to commemorate the pilots who died in the Second World War.
