The exhibition Storm Surges and Coastal Protection in the Dörpstuuv Kollmar
The Dörpstuuv Kollmar, an inconspicuous gem in the middle of the idyllic marshland landscape, houses a fascinating exhibition that takes visitors on a journey through the turbulent history of the region. The dramatic saga of storm surges and coastal protection is vividly told here, illustrated by impressive display boards and pictures. The exhibition paints a vivid picture of the challenges that people have had to face here for centuries: The merciless battle against the forces of nature, the struggle with the constantly rising sea level and the construction of dykes and barrages, which often enough could not withstand the force of the water. The memory of the devastating February flood of 1962 is particularly vivid. But the exhibition offers more than just a depiction of natural disasters. It also tells the story of the settlement of the area, from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Artifacts such as a stone axe, old cannonballs and other treasures found in the Elbe bear witness to the region's rich past. Outside, an old sailing ship anchor invites visitors to take a look, as does a replica of a medieval Hamburg sea buoy. A visit to Dörpstuuv Kollmar is recommended at any time of year, but the place is particularly charming in spring and summer, when the marsh landscape is in full bloom.
