St. Paul's Church

Kautzstraße 11, 25541 Brunsbüttel

St. Paul's Church in Brunsbüttel is an impressive architectural testimony from the early 20th century. Its construction in 1914/1915 is closely linked to the opening of the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) in 1895 and the accompanying development of Brunsbüttelkoog. The Prussian government ordered its construction and received personal support from Kaiser Wilhelm II. The architect, government architect Ewald Klatt, designed the church in dark brick. St. Paul's Church is at the center of an architectural ensemble that also includes the pastorate and the parish hall. This early example of a community center in Dithmarschen is characterized by its neo-baroque forms, which have a strong independence and functionality. Although the original neo-baroque elements inside the church have largely been lost due to extensive renovations in 1957, the ceiling and the three-sided gallery are still reminiscent of the original space. A color drawing in the entrance area gives an impression of the original design. The current interior of St. Paul's Church is predominantly modern.
