St. Nicholas Church Plön

The massive brick building with its 60-meter-high tower replaced a Baroque church that had previously burned down after a lightning strike in 1866-68. The ruin remained standing for more than two years due to lack of funds. The church facade clearly shows the 17th-century masonry that continued to be used in the new building.

In keeping with the taste of the time, the architecture was based on medieval Romanesque and Gothic style elements, incorporating remnants of the foundation walls that survived after the fire. The Nikolai Church hosts many concerts, from church music to guest appearances by Vicky Leandros. Musical highlights are the concerts as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
