St. Mary's Church Kirchnüchel
The Marien-Kirche Kirchnüchel, situated on a 115 meter high hill, is a historical jewel from the 13th century. Built from carefully collected fieldstones, it is a testament to the dedication and love of its builders. Its first documented mention can be found in the list of all churches in the diocese of Lübeck from 1259. The church is famous for its windows designed by Max Schegulla, which are reminiscent of Chagall's window creations in the synagogue of the Jerusalem University Hospital. They catch the eye of passers-by and invite them to linger. A special attraction of St. Mary's Church in Kirchnüchel is a seven-centimetre small, hand-carved ivory Madonna from the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, it attracted believers from all directions, who bowed down before it and asked for help or miracles. After a period in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum, the Madonna returned to her original place in 1969 and still touches visitors with her charisma today. In addition to the Madonna, a spring considered to have healing powers, the Marienquelle, was also a destination for medieval pilgrims. Today, the Marien-Kirche Kirchnüchel with its silence and tranquillity offers a space for contemplation and self-reflection. Guided tours of the church and the park are available by arrangement.
