Schleibrücke Kappeln

Bundesstraße, 24376 Kappeln

The Schleibrücke bridge in Kappeln is an impressive structure with a rich history dating back to 1867. Originally built as a pontoon bridge, it served as an important transport link for the merchants of Kappeln. With a length of 180 meters and 18 cranes that made it possible to open the bridge, it was a masterpiece of its time. However, the combination of locomotive and railroad carriages was too much of a burden, which is why the carriages had to be pulled across the bridge by horses. Over the years, the bridge was repeatedly damaged by climatic conditions and shipping traffic. In 1927, it was replaced by a swing bridge that was able to carry two locomotives with a total weight of 68 tons. Since 2000, the Schleibrücke has presented itself in its current form as a double-leaf bascule bridge. It safely guides car traffic between Kappeln and Schwansen and is a fascinating testimony to the art of engineering. A visit to the Schleibrücke bridge in Kappeln is a must for anyone interested in architecture and history.
