Pedestrian tunnel Rendsburg
The increase in shipping and road traffic in the 1950s meant that the Rendsburg swing bridge was no longer sufficient. As a result, there were more frequent and longer bridge openings and longer traffic jams on the intersecting federal highway. Therefore, the Rendsburg road tunnel was designed with a central tube for pedestrians and cyclists. However, due to space constraints and because the B 77 federal highway was to be bypassed to the west of the Rendsburg urban area, it was not possible to build the tunnel with its long ramps directly next to the swing bridge. Therefore, two separate tunnel structures were built: the road tunnel, opened in 1961, and the pedestrian tunnel, built between 1962 and 1965. On both sides of the pedestrian tunnel, two escalators and one elevator each lead to a depth of 27 meters below the canal water level. At the time of installation in 1965, the escalators were the longest in Western Europe.
