Old town hall Wilster
The Old Town Hall in Wilster, a magnificent Renaissance building dating back to 1585, is a real gem in the architectural landscape of Holstein. After extensive renovation from 1990 to 1998, it shines in new splendor and tells stories from times gone by. Until 1829, it served as a municipal administration building, later even as a prison and emergency shelter after the Second World War. Today it is a lively cultural center that invites visitors to guided tours and events. Inside, the Old Town Hall reveals a wealth of historical treasures. The "Wilstermarschstube" on the first floor with its artfully carved wood paneling and blue Delft tiles provides an insight into the 200-year-old home decor of the Wilstermarsch. On the upper floor, the magnificent banqueting hall and the courtroom, where justice was once dispensed, are impressive. This is also where the valuable books of Etatsrätin Doos are housed, an impressive "library from the time of Goethe" with 2,700 books from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The attic houses a further 1,700 valuable books, a generous donation from the merchant Gustavus Witt-Warstede, whose ancestors came from Wilstermarsch. A visit to the Old Town Hall is like a journey through time through the history of Wilster and an unforgettable experience for culture and history enthusiasts.
