Kasenort lock
The Kasenort lock, an impressive technical masterpiece and important structure for shipping and draining the Wilstermarsch, is waiting to be discovered. Its history dates back to the 15th century, when flood gates were used to protect inland areas from flooding. After a devastating flood disaster, today's lock was built in 1925 and plays a crucial role in draining the Wilstermarsch, which lies below sea level. The Kasenort lock, strategically located at the mouth of the Wilster-Au into the Stör, opens automatically at low tide to drain the water from the Wilster-Au. At high tide, the gates are closed to protect the marshland. The lock can accommodate ships up to 6.70 meters wide and the lifting height of 1.70 meters enables shipping traffic even at changing water levels. The Kasenort lock is not only a fascinating technical monument, but also an attractive excursion destination. A charming café right next to the lock invites you to take a well-earned break. A cycling or hiking tour along the Stör, past the Kasenort lock, offers a unique combination of technology and idyllic nature.
