Holmer Sandberg
The Holmer Sandberge - a living testimony to the Ice Age, embedded in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein. This largest inland dune area in the region reveals a fascinating journey through time. A century ago, open sandy areas and heath dominated the landscape, but the disturbing drifting sand posed a challenge for farmers. With the reforestation of pine trees, it was possible to make the arable land usable again. In 2005, the acquisition of an area south of the Sandberg marked the beginning of a new era. The heathland was brought back to life with the planting of deciduous trees and the partial clearing of the pine forest. Today, this area is a valuable habitat for numerous animal species and a paradise for nature lovers who can marvel at the diversity of flora and fauna. The Holmer Sandberge are not only a geotope, but also an FFH conservation area that preserves the beauty and history of this unique landscape. A visit is worthwhile at any time of year, but especially in spring and autumn, when the heather is in full bloom and the deciduous trees put on a colorful show.
