St. Mary's Church Heiligenstedten

St. Mary's Church in Heiligenstedten is a historical jewel that rises up in the middle of an idyllic landscape on the dyke. This red-baked brick church is a symbol of time and faith, a place that invites pilgrims and travelers to pause and reflect. It has an eventful history that probably dates back to before the 9th century. It is assumed that Ansgar laid relics in Heiligenstedten before he took over the office of bishop in Hamburg in 831. This could have contributed to the naming of the town. St. Mary's Church was destroyed by fire in the 10th century and later rebuilt as a place of pilgrimage for St. Mary. Inside the church there are two impressive statues of the Virgin Mary: a wooden Madonna from the early Gothic period and a Mary with the infant Jesus in a halo from the late Gothic period. Anyone descending the steps into the church today is greeted by great brightness. The chancel with its warming old red stone and magnificent altarpieces invites you to take a pleasant break.
